The Fifth of July

My son is back in Michigan and has returned to the sober living house he was previously asked to leave because he wasn't getting up on time. Back then, the owner told him he couldn't come back under any circumstances. But my son took it upon himself--while he was still in Atlanta--to call the house owner and ask to come back, because he needed to. The owner agreed.

This was a monumental step for my son and I'm incredibly proud of him for taking the initiative. It shows me that he truly wanted it.

He spent one night at our house, had dinner with my family last night, went to a meeting, then went to sober living, where lots of familiar faces were ecstatic to see him.

The road to recovery is a long one. And even though it may get sidetracked from time to time, there is always Hope along the way. Always. We must never forget that.

Yesterday was the Fourth of July. But today I'm celebrating the Fifth of July. No fireworks needed.

  1. thanks be to God! Love that the House gave him another chance. Grace upon grace.

As a smoker who has quit many, many times (therefore backslid a lot) I have heard it said that when you fall off the wagon, you have to start all over again. Like that sober time was somehow wiped out. I think that's too harsh. I think the sober time teaches us how life can be without our substance, and gives us a grounding to go back to. Every experience your son has will help him to stay sober longer, to get back to that place quicker if he does use, which of course hopefully he won't. He has many people pulling for him.
    Peace.

  2. Michigan is also our home state. Haven't found a treatment center here that sounds like it is worth the money. My son is dual diagnosis also. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks

  3. Anonymous... Where in Michigan are you located. My son did one stint in Brighton Hospital in Brighton. It was his first rehab, and I thought it was pretty good. But I don't think *he* was ready for treatment yet. His best experience happened at Michael's House in Palm Springs, California. If you have insurance, it can be very affordable. We worked through Foundations Recovery Network to facilitate his placement in Michael's House. I never thought we'd be able to afford to send him so far away for treatment, but Foundations Recovery Network was wonderful in helping us with insurance, booking the flight, etc. You can find them on the web at http://www.foundationsrecoverynetwork.com/ or call them at 1-877-714-1318. The person we worked with was named Britt Bonner. If you want to e-mail me with any questions, let me know and I'll give you an e-mail address you can reach me at.
